The JS Sevens
(A Jewish Singles (JS) group for 50+)
The JS Sevens’ held their first ever Annual Fun Fund Raiser, a Karaoke Night at a special place called Lulu’s Restaurant. We met on Saturday night August 28th, Great event….!!!!!!!
We met at 5:30pm…. got set-up….then people began strolling in…. ordering margaritas, some fine beers and wine and really tasty food. The DJ, who exclusively was ours ‘til 8 pm, began playing music, singing and getting everyone relaxed. The fun part was we had our own PRIVATE ROOM….
It took a little while for everyone to “flow with their glow” and reach into their “other half”….. . Once into the rhythm of the night, there was not enough time to have everyone sing.….we needed more time. After the Karaoke people moseyed outside to listen to the band that began at 8 pm. People hung out ‘til ten, had some more libations and just had a great time.
Take a look at the pictures from both parties by going to the-jnvjcc.blogspot.com
Some kudos go out to Joy and Leroy, again, for helping plan the event; Nancy for helping take money and registration at the registration table and to Lulu’s for being so accommodating. When you are thumbing through the pictures, take a look at the sign we had at the registration table….a big THANKS to Eunice.
Wish we had a podcast of the event…well maybe not one where I was singing…but when I was up there with a group I can tell you it was really fun.
Also a big thank you to Ellen for spreading the word and bringing her group…which you can read about on ‘wonderfulonlinewomen.blogspot.com… they all seemed to really enjoy themselves.
The JS Sevens meet every 3rd Wednesday of the month. First is a planning meeting 7-8 pm then at 8 we will have a fun event.
Some future events being planned are a night at the Hollywood Park, a Wine Tasting in Malibu and Let’s Tour LA…just to highlight some of our up-coming events.
Out next meeting is on Wednesday October 20th at Temple Ramat Zion, 17655 Devonshire St., in Northridge (that is where the group meets) at 7 pm. On tap, not to drink, will be the discussion of our next two events.

What Cost Freedom
Costs of Freedom
In 1857 a gentleman named Frederick Douglas wrote the following:
The general sentiment of mankind is that a man who will not fight for himself, when he has the means of doing so, is not worth being fought for by others, and this sentiment is just. For a man who does not value freedom for himself will never value it for others, or put himself to any inconvenience to gain ti for others......
The whole history of the progress of human liberty shows that all concessions yet made to her august claims have been born of earnest struggle. The conflict has been exiting, agitating, all-absorbing, and for the time being, putting all other tumults to silence. It must do this or it does nothing. If there is no struggle there is no progress.. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet deprecate agitation are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lighting. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters.
This struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, and it may be both moral and physical, but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will. Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them, and these will continue till they are resisted with either words or blows or with both. The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress.

Some kudos go out to Joy and Leroy for helping plan the event; Esther, Eunice and Eileen for the new phone tree and making calls; Scott for all the hard prep work, and Joie and Nancy for helping Esther and Eunice welcome guests at the registration table. When you are thumbing through the pictures, take a look at the sign we had at the registration table….a big THANKS to Eunice.
Wish we had a podcast of the event…well maybe not one where I was singing…But we did have two wonderful singers, Karen and Patt (check out their website at sentimentaljourneyla.com) who set the tone for the entire evening. Then, Scott Pucker lent his voice to the affair and we were off and running.
Also a big thank you to Ellen for spreading the word and bringing her group…which you can read about on ‘wonderfulonlinewomen.blogspot.com… they all seemed to really enjoy themselves.

The-J Preschool Newsletter
Spring is Blooming
The preschool children have planted flowers
and the stems have popped up from the ground. So we
will have beautiful flowers blooming soon. The children
have been so busy taking care of them and they
cannot wait to see the flowers. We have been
busy talking about the three "Rs" and it is not
reading, writing and arithmetic! NO, it is
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle! We made two
boxes; one for waste and one for recyclables.
The children are being "Hero's of the Earth."
We have been talking about who the
people are in our neighborhood. We took a mini
field trip and walked outside and watched some
workers put up a new electric pole. The kids
were amazed at the big crane and that the truck's
tires were bigger than they are.

The "Troglodyte"
So you ask, "What is a troglodyte?" It is a person that lives in a cave. He keeps to himself and no one knows what he is really like or what he is capable of doing. If we were making a movie, the person might be living in a cave above the city. Children would make up stories and games about the Trog. Legends would abound. Some entrepreneur would make Trog dolls to sell. The local restaurant would serve an entree called 'the trog' (what that would be is anyone's guess). The local officials would name a street after him/her and there were be a day all businesses would close to celebrate "Our Troglodyte Day." Flags and pins commemorating the Trog would be bought and traded at the local swap meet.
Whenever there is mystery and superstition surrounding an unknown, all sorts of stories, ceremonies and events arise. But, we are not making a movie. We do, however, have a mystery of our own here at The-J.
The legacy and tradition of The-J is not a mystery. But, whether the legend becomes a permanent reality and continues to grow and to flourish depends upon your telling the true story of YOUR Center. Please send in your story and we'll post it on YOUR CENTER'S BlOG.

"Singles at 7 or The JS Sevens"
Meet n' Eat
Singles at 7
April 25th 4-7pm
10051 Melinda Way, Northridge
Recreation Room
What a great event!!! I want to thank our hosts Esther, Eunice and Carol. Also there were many helping to set-up and clean-up and I want to thank all of you for your help.
For without the group there would be no group. This entity we have created is mushrooming because of all of you. Without your spiritual support, your help with marketing, your ideas and follow-through, this event would not have taken place.
On behalf of the Board of Directors of “The-J”, Scott and myself, we thank you all.
So we came, we ate (good appetizers, too much cake for me), we played some mixer games(thank you Bruce for giving this event life and direction), ate some more and then just hung out and talked.
The energy level was high and if you put a few ounces of yourself into the day I think you came away with much much more.
There is a saying “the more you give the more you get”. That is so true! In life when you step outside your comfort zone, when you move to those areas that make you feel a bit uneasy, only then does the light that shines within each of us shine the brightest.
I have attended groups and meetings and each time I sit back and said “what are they going to do for me” or “what will I get out this event” the more I got LESS!!!!
One of the goals of this group is to also give back (Tikkun Olam) to the community. In fact it is one of the main purposes of “The-J”. We have talked about that in our initial meetings and I hope that in the near future we can plan an event or activity that will help repair the community.
I would like to extend an invitation to all of you to come to the Karaoke night (whether you sing or not :)). There will be a flyer coming out soon.
Lastly if anyone can help with the web site, flyers, advertising please let me know. Sending me places to advertise helps build a good network. I need YOU to take the ball and/or flyer and run with it. The reason we are successful is because of.....YOU!!

Everyone has this light inside of them. Most of us, including me, tend to cover it up and never let it out. When "I" do I tend to be a happier person. One that gives back....one that shares from my soul...one that cares.
I hope some of you that read this blog will join us in bringing back the light to NVJCC or "The-J". Help us move our vision (that you will make your vision) along a path of excitement, joy and happiness.
See you all soon.

57' Chevy
Do you remember the 57' Chevy? With those fins that made it look like it could fly.
Our Center is older then that Chevy and though we can't fly we are in the midst of a great surge. We have some great people that helped start the Center, some 50 + years ago, and they join the fight once again. The are working to revitalize and help rebuild. Do you want to be a part of the new vision?
"Do you know a place where you met someone, laughed, danced, cried and after 50 years your friendship still thrieves?....Thanks Jewish Community Centers!"
Come join us....you will have a blast and it won't be from the past!

The-J Your Jewish Community Center
Well I have done it! I created a blog.
I am the Executive Director of "The-J" Your Jewish Community Center and I want to let you all know what's been happening over the last few years with North Valley Jewish Community Center (NVJCC).
I'll start by giving a brief history.
NVJCC was created over 50 years ago. A group of dedicated people put their hearts, minds and money together and created one of the greatest JCC's in California. In fact they still are a part of the current Center, our Center without Walls. More on that later.
So we begin our journey. Look forward to hearing from past members, those interested in helping to resurrect our center and those just interested.
